What's Under Twisty the Clown's Mask?
We'll Find Out in the Next 'AHS' Episode
What's in a name? Well, a lot actually for American Horror Story's second episode, Massacres and Matinees. The premiere showcased Jessica Lange's voice and teasers feature an surprising vocal from Sarah Paulson, so we know what is to be expected from the word "matinee." But I'm more interested in what's next for the massacre — curtesy of creator Ryan Murphy's creepiest villain yet. Something's under Twisty the Clown's mask that scared at least a third of the crew off set during filming, according to Murphy. And a Tweet revealed that fans would find out just what it is if they can keep their eyes open long enough during episode two. The impending massacre will have to do with Jupiter's new troupe of freaks because, as far as he's concerned, the evil clown status is his and only his. The fact that Twisty identifies himself as a "freak" (if we're using Elsa's definition of the word) tells me that something dreadful happened to his face that makes him one, serving the mask's purpose.
Each of Elsa's freaks has a unique deformity that makes them especially freaky and unusual. The performers have two heads, three breasts, lobster fingers and wrongly placed beards that Elsa believes people will line up to see. But not if Twisty the evil, murderous clown has anything to do with it. Even though Twisty is a freak himself and Elsa would likely invite him to join the family, these freaks are taking his spot light and he's about to make their lives a living hell for it.

When the massacre begins Wednesday, Twisty will reveal the secret behind his mask. Evidently, underneath lies such a deformity that would force him to hide the lower half of his face, cover his skull and paint the rest, but what is it? Unfortunately, Murphy Tweeted that the reveal would be made in Wednesday’s episode but it doesn't really give us much information besides the fact that whatever's under there is even worse than the creepy-as-all-hell mask he wears over it. If that's even possible. It's a long shot — but I'm thinking along the lines of Heath-Ledger-Joker-type scars, no lips and a potentially completely visible human brain.
We already know that the character Edward Mordrake is a man of two faces, so that takes a second head off the list of things that might be under Twisty's mask. But that doesn't mean that it won't be just as far-fetched. It's pretty clear that Twisty is already screwed up. He murders almost everyone he comes into contact with, tortures children he picks up off the streets for not laughing at his tricks and allows himself to be sold to a young boy obsessed with freaks. This makes me think Twisty has some brain damage — leading to my theory that there are brains under that cap. In that sense, maybe I wasn't so far off with the Batman reference. If the brain is possible, the lower half of the skull is probably visible, too: Harvey Dent-style.
I don't think anyone will successfully guess what's beneath that awful mask, or how it happened, but whatever it is, Murphy told EW he's convinced will make you faint in terror. Watch if you dare, but I'm pretty sure I'll catch one glimpse under that mask and be like nope, nope, NOPE, nope, no thanks.
